D
Dargothans
An alien race from Dargotha Major in the Cardinale system, although they
may have originated as a colony of the so-called 'Ur-Dargothan' civilisation
in the Core. Contact with Dargothans began in 4361 with the Sha'Har, and
reverse engineering of the Sha'Har's nano-genetics allowed the Dargothans
to perfect accelerated planetary environmental restructuring - or 'terraforming'
- by 4444 when Dargotha Minor was colonised. Mainstran human contact with
the Dargothans lasted from 4588 to 4707, when the last stragglers of the
diaspora passed in the Core. In this period, widespread trade and industry,
dominated by Unisoft, made Dargothan technologies the most sought-after
commodities in the League, and the economic impact of the Cult's successful
ejection of the Dargothans from Cardinale cannot be overstated. Nor indeed
can the salient roles played by the Dargothans in the Red Sun Incident
of 4670 and the Celeste Affair of 4699. The 'cleansing' activities undertaken
by the Cult have compromised xenoarcheaological investigation of the Dargothans
to the extent that little more is known about this race. Since 4707, sporadic
reports from the frontier with the Core have failed to confirm any resumed
contact with the Dargothans.
Diomedes,
system
Colonised from 4341, and rapidly infiltrated by the League during the
First Colony War. The system was renowned for it's natural beauty, latterly
tarnished by prolonged conflict and the explosion in biotechnological
industries in the New Empire period.
Dionite
Extremely rare ore, bearing Dionium, a heat-resistant metal used in complex
alloys for high-tolerance component manufacture.
'Dirt
Warriors'
A short-lived terrorist organisation from the Cardinale system, their
unusual name has been attributed to a (poor) transliteration of an ancient
Dargothan battle-cry, which has led to speculation that the 'Dirt Warriors'
were, at least in part, some kind of anti-colonial resistance. The organisation's
efforts were primarily directed against Unisoft, and they disappeared
shortly after end of the Second Colony War.
Diva,
Captain Arquette
A pivotal figure of the Second Colony War period, those records which
survived the wars and termination of Bureau 19 are unspecific about the
origins or activities of the doyenne of the League Intelligence Service.
Her birth has been narrowed down to the outer Sol system, possibly Titan,
in or around 4643, maybe under the name of Anne Becks. She was probably
a survivor of one of the many unsuccessful attempts made to flee Sol for
Alpha-Centauri by sublight hibernation ship in this period, and seems
to have rapidly progressed from League state orphanage, to the military,
to Bureau 19, where she was probably exposed to The Father and may have
concocted the 4669 'Alien Scare'. She was heavily involved in the Red
Sun Incident of 4670, during which she was listed missing, presumed dead.
Donachet
An alien race closely associated with the Hilachet of Marjorie's Star,
the Donachet were considered unique because of their access to subspace.
Direct human human contact did not occur until 4627, almost forty years
subsequent to contact with the Hilachet, with whom they had been warring
for as long as a millenium. This conflict was escalated by League interference
during the Red Sun Incident, a rapid shift in human alleigance allowing
the Donachet to gain a persistent upper-hand. The exact relationship between
the two antagonist races is not understood, although the mineral Low Stark,
which is unique to Marjorie's Star, is considered to be a major or contributory
factor to their differences. Contact with the Donachet is sporadic, and
little more is known.
Draco,
system
Binary system colonised from 4252 and home to the major war industries
of the Old Empire. It's capture by the League in early 4620 spelt an effective
end to Sol's ability to project interstellar power into the colonies.
Draco continued to function as an industial centre well into the New Empire.
